Newspaper Illustration & Characture

More often than not it is specific individuals that invite hostility or ridicule pertinent to their ‘recent actions’. Mostly politicians, but other media inflated personalities such as entertainers and sportspersons can expect no quarter from the pencils and pens of those illustrators contriving to humiliate, humble and mock! ... The nature of this genre will reveal a style of illustration that encompasses a number of approaches. These can be symbolic, pictorial, humourous either in situation or deed, poignant, thought provoking and conceptual in message and visual language. But the overriding character of this domain of illustration is the craft and practise of caricature. Varied approaches to visual language and autographic preference, and differential degrees of distortion provide for an area of practise that is extremely diverse. Sometimes a subtle change in a subject’s physique of expression will push a portrait into a new realm of exposition. There can also be severe, almost ‘violent’ distortions applied to facial features. The degree and level of distortion is usually commensurate with the status and commentary being given regarding the subject’s ‘crime’.
